Right to Buy and Acquire

You may have the right to buy your home either through the 'Right to Buy' or 'Right to Acquire' schemes.

Preserved Right to Buy

If you have been a tenant of North Dorset District Council since 6 September 1994 which was the date of the transfer of properties to Signpost you may have what is known as a ‘Preserved Right to Buy’.

Right to Acquire

If you have been a tenant of Signpost for at least 2 years before 18 January 2005 or 5 years since 18 January 2005 you may have what is known as ‘The Right to Acquire’. The right only applies to specific areas. Your home must have been built or purchased by a housing association and funded by grant from the Housing Corporation or a local authority or other funding. Signpost will confirm whether you have the ‘Right to Acquire’ upon request.

You will not have the ‘Right to Buy’ or ‘Right to Acquire’ if:

  1. You have broken the terms of a suspended possession order for example rent arrears.
  2. You have a bankruptcy petition against you.
  3. Your home has been designed or adapted to make it suitable for people who are physically disabled
  4. Your home is one of a group generally let to people of a pensionable age or who are physically disabled and special services are provide to them such as warden or the use of a common room close by.
  5. Your home is one of a group generally let to people who are suffering from a mental disorder and special services are provided.
  6. Your home is particularly suitable for occupation by people of pensionable age and was built for those people.
  7. If you are applying for the right to acquire the valuation of your home is valued at or below our loan on your home.
  8. Signpost has served a notice on you that we intend to demolish your home within 2 years.

If you wish to apply for either a ‘Right to Buy’ or a ‘Right to Acquire’ you need to contact the Legal Team and you will be sent an application form (RTB1 for the Right to Buy or RTA1 for the Right to Acquire) and a booklet giving you further information.
