Housing with Respect - Sailing in the Sound
28 October 2009
The Housing with Respect Partnership (HwRP),
which includes Signpost Housing Association, held a joint event for
their young residents in the Plymouth area. As part of the
celebrations for the annual 'Respect Week', more than 20 young
people between the ages of 11 to 18 were invited from across the
city to take part in a day’s sailing event across the Sound from
Plymouth to Saltash.
The aim of the day was to learn to respect
differences and embrace diversity through some fun activities on
the water. They were put through their paces and very soon they
were moving from boat to boat with the ease of experienced sailors.
The day was a huge success with the young people making new friends
and learning new skills.
The Partnership offers support to Black and
Minority Ethnic (BME) residents on behalf of the partner
organisations, on an individual basis. In Plymouth, BME residents
are often victims of racial harassment that goes unreported. Some
BME residents live in fear and isolation. To date the Housing with
Respect Project has helped more than 100 families cope with racial
harassment, anti-social behaviour, housing transfers, domestic
abuse and support.
