Homes have been built in the centre of Gillingham to provide
affordable homes for rent to local people. The scheme, by Signpost
Housing Association was officially opened on Monday 9 September
2002 by local Mayor - Councillor Colin Dann, David Wells - Chairman
of Signpost Housing Group and Robert Walter MP was also in attendance.
Built just off the main high street in Gillingham, the development
is made up of a mix of houses and flats and includes 3 retail
/ office units.
The scheme cost £2.2million to develop, which was part
funded by North Dorset District Council and the Housing Corporation.
Councillor Colin Dann, Mayor of Gillingham said, "This
is a very proud moment in Gillingham's history. The standard
of build is high and above all else it meets the needs of
local people. I would like to thank Signpost and the other
partners involved for what they have achieved with this scheme."
David Wells, Chairman of Signpost Housing Group added, "We
are very pleased to work in partnership with North Dorset
District Council, and the Housing Corporation to provide 33
new affordable homes for rent to local people and 3 retail
/ office units in the heart of Gillingham. We would also like
to extend a thank you to local businessman Vic Toogood who
made this scheme possible and many of his ideas have been
incorporated into the design. His enthusiasm and support have
been very much appreciated by Signpost. "
The design and build contractor was Louis Hamilton Construction
of Wareham. The accommodation comprises two 3 bedroom houses,
five 3 bedroom flats, ten 2 bedroom flats - 2 of which are
suitable for wheelchair users, and sixteen 1 bedroom flats.
Tenants are due to move into their new homes during the first
week of October 2002.
